MIDNIGHT STATION - by Ray O'Bannon

take the last train out, sit by the window
ravens circle, starlight gleams
rest your eyes and sleep overtakes you
lice and maggots fill your dreams
a sudden jolt, conductor wakes you
midnight station, final stop
a town called midnight, how peculiar
and off the train you blindly hop

midnight township, welcoms stranger
we're so very glad you came

sudden chill in the evening air
and the floorboards creak beneath your feet
as you glance around at ruined buildings
darkened houses, empty streets
so you ask the man for a ticket home
but he only smiles and shakes his head
says next train's twelve tomorrow night
and I'd be careful where I tread in

midnight township, welcome stranger
come on over, there's no danger
we're so very glad you came

chorus:
midnight station, not quite the way it seems
don't you think you've lost your way
midnight station, too late now
'cause no-one ever gets away from midnight
hey hey midnight station...hey hey midnight station...

now folks 'round town can't wait to meet you
new blood always brings a smile
and you won't find them so peculiar
once you've been around a while
pay no mind to the way they stare
or how they laugh behind your back
they're only tense, a little hungry
just anxious for their midnight snack at

(chorus)

just can't shake that sense of doom
so you run for the station time forgot
you reach the tracks but nothing's there
an empty field, a vacant lot
and a small brass plaque that tells the story
plain as day for all to see
midnight station burned to the ground
on a midnight clear, 1923

midnight township, welcome stranger
come on over, there's no danger
we're so very glad you came
